How Long Should You Wait?

Be warned: Someday is coming. You know, that optimal time in the future when you will do all of the things you've been putting off. On Someday, you will ask your biggest prospect to engage you. You will raise your rates or ask your boss for a raise. You will solicit feedback from that demanding client so you can make yourself more invaluable to them. You will champion that initiative that you know will make things better for your firm. You will call in that favor/chit you have been saving for a rainy day.

Of course, the only thing that keeps us from moving our timeline up to the current day is fear. So we convince ourselves that the ideal opportunity will present itself sometime in the future. And we wait.

As you read this, I encourage you to declare today as Someday for at least one of the things you have been putting off. Yes, it will require courage. Yes, there may be some risk. But it won't be any easier in the future. In fact, it may be considerably harder to affect change as the relevant parties become more entrenched in the status quo. So start with the most reasonable item on your Someday list and show fear that, at least today, you are in charge.
