Exactly Who Are You, Anyway?

Written by David Ackert | Mar 2, 2012 6:53:51 AM

I just went through the arduous process of revising my website. I’ve lost count of the revisions that preceded this one (it doesn’t help that I’m a perfectionist), but the hard work paid off. Besides an improved end-product, the process helped me to crystalize what I do. In the past, I'd go to networking events and struggle with my 'elevator pitch' as I tried to introduce my services to others in under thirty seconds. The results were usually forgettable or confusing or both.

Now, I had to turn the mirror on myself and find the right words to describe my firm’s services. I settled on the language posted to the homepage: “The Ackert Advisory delivers business development solutions for service professionals and their firms. Our coaching, training, and e-learning programs are tailored to the unique needs of the legal, accounting, and financial services industries.”

I also had to ask myself, “What do I want this website to accomplish?” In the past, I’ve been guilty of having a website just to avoid the embarrassment of not having a website. But this time, the answer came quickly: I want a clear, inviting place where allies and prospective clients can get a quick sense of what we do and how they can get involved. I don’t think our last website accomplished this—but then, I’m too close to be objective.

So, I have a favor to ask of you. Click on the logo in the upper left corner of this page. It will take you to the homepage. Spend a minute or two on this new version and let me know if you find it to be clear and inviting. There is no feedback more valuable than yours—after all, if you read my blog with any regularity, you’re a repeat visitor. Share your thoughts in the comments section below or just send me an email directly. I want to know what you think.

Oh, and while you’re at it, ask yourself if it’s time to give your website a face-lift. You’ll find that the exercise answers that age-old philosophical question: “Exactly who am I, anyway?”
